Years ago, while attending college, I did a report on the
peoples and history of the area of Mexico known as the Yucatan Peninsula.
What fascinated me most was the history of the Mayan people. The Mayans
were a people of contrasts. They knew about the wheel (wheels were found
on ancient toys) and had built magnificent roads to connect their cities and yet
never used the wheel for transportation. They were not a warlike
people. When conquered by a neighboring civilization the Mayans culture
was so strong and overwhelming that they actually ended up absorbing their
conquerers. Any study of the Yucatan must include a study of the
ancient peoples who shaped the destiny of the region that we love to visit today
.
